Many police departments focus their efforts on stopping drunk driving during the holiday season. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notes that they will be conducting the annual Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign starting on Dec. 13 and continuing through the end of the year.
It is imperative that all drivers avoid driving after drinking this holiday season. There isn’t any reason to drive while you are impaired. You want to be able to make it home to your family and so does everyone else on the roads. This is why there are such strict laws against driving drunk – it is a huge safety risk. The laws set penalties like the loss of your driver’s license, fines and time in jail to try to deter people from driving drunk.
Before you head out to a holiday party, think honestly about what you are going to do. If the answer to that is drink, don’t drive yourself there. Grab a rideshare or take public transit. You can even have a friend drive you. If you do need to drive, try to find a place to stay near the party. If it is at a home, ask the host if you can spend the night so you will have time to sober up before you head home.
Being pulled over if the police officers on patrol think you’ve been drinking can be a harrowing experience. People who are arrested for drunk driving are facing a costly journey. You should think carefully about your defense strategy early on so you don’t lose out on valuable time.
