We recently discussed the criminal justice reform recently signed by President Trump. The passage of this was a big step forward, but there is still a lot of work to do before the system is working as it was intended.
One thing that has to change is how people view the criminal justice system. It is important that people who break the law face consequences for their actions. But at the same time, the courts can’t ignore the underlying problems that contribute to law-breaking.
For example, a person who is stealing food from the store might not be able to find a job and may be hungry. They didn’t go about feeding themselves in the best way, but this might be out of desperation. In this case, would the person be best punished by putting them in prison with hardened criminals or would the situation be handled better by issuing a punishment, such as community service, that can encourage them to change their methods?
We know that facing criminal charges isn’t easy, especially if it is your first time in court. We are here to help you figure out what options you might have for your defense and how any consequences of a conviction might affect you. We are here to help you as you work toward the goal you set.
As the criminal justice system continues to evolve, there might be options available to defendants that weren’t previously possible. For this reason, you shouldn’t base your decisions on what happened to another person in a similar situation. We need to look at your case and come up with a customized strategy.
